WORKSHOPS

Scaling from Collaboration to Collective Impact [Sylvia Cheuy]

This workshop introduces the Collective Impact approach and how it invites a new way of thinking and acting to address complex social issues.  The Collective Impact approach is then anchored within the continuum of collaborative approaches. The key features of Collective Impact are then reviewed.  These include: the necessary 3 pre-conditions of Collective Impact and the 5 Conditions of Collective Impact. At the workshop, tools, resources and stories were shared to:

  • Assess whether Collective Impact is the right approach for addressing your particular issue;
  • Determine the community’s readiness for implementing a Collective Impact approach;
  • Map key elements of the Collective Impact journey; and,
  • Illustrate examples of successful collective impact initiatives

Sylvia's Suggested Resources:

Getting at Root Causes [Mark Cabaj]

Experiment with four different methods for mapping the “root causes” of a complex community issue and how this informs your group’s community innovation and change strategy. This practical set of tools will enhance your ability to get to the core issues you are trying to resolve. The accompanying handout for this workshop is available here.

Leadership from the Inside Out [Michael Jones]

Think of a story or time when you felt most alive and engaged in what you were doing. Explore leadership as the art of following the thread of our own aliveness. Consider what is motivating you to engage in large scale change and the issues you personally need to resolve to achieve it. Read Michael's essay, Art of the Impossible, from his book, Artful Leadership [available on Amazon.ca].  Michael's music is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Accelerating Impact in Alberta [Steve MacDonald & Stephen Huddart]

Consider the amazing work that is occurring in Alberta, especially in Human services, as the province implements a new social policy framework, a new poverty reduction strategy and innovative ways to reduce the number of aboriginal children in care. In this workshop Steve MacDonald, Deputy Minister of Human Services, will share his excitement for the work of his ministry. He will be joined by Stephen Huddart, CEO of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, who will bring his work on accelerating impact through social innovation to the discussion.

Building Your Tribe: Engagement Lessons from the Private Sector [Lisa Attygalle]

 Learn tactics for how you can build partner and citizen loyalty by listening to your stakeholders and engaging them in meaningful interaction. This session will explore the key principles of loyalty and will share examples from the private sector to learn how their practices can be applied to community engagement scenarios. Also discover how social media and technology can be integrated to help you build a continuous communication strategy. The accompanying handout for this workshop is available here.
