WORKSHOPS

Deepening Community: Restacking the Building Blocks of Civil Society [Paul Born]

To build a collective impact initiative for large scale change, we depend on one common assumption, that people’s sense of community is alive and well. That people care deeply about their fellow citizens. We assume that people care about their community and want a better community. What do we do when this foundation is unstable or as some might report, crumbling? This workshop, based on Paul’s latest book, will look at what we can do to strengthen our community infrastructure and in turn improve our collaborative outcomes. The accompanying handout for this workshop can be found here.

Building your Collective Impact Backbone  [Liz Weaver]

Successful collective impact efforts are guided by a backbone infrastructure which supports the collaborative work. This workshop will uncover the key design elements of backbone infrastructure and how to build a case for resourcing, supporting and funding backbones to gain traction on collective impact.

Collaborative Leadership [Michael Jones]

A community depends upon the health of its commons to maintain a sense of vitality and well-being. The commons is the possibility space where the community can re-imagine itself and its future in new ways. And a healthy commons depends on leaders with diverse perspectives collaborating together. This session will explore the core dynamics that are required for collaborative leadership to succeed and how leaders can contribute to ensuring a healthy commons in their community. Read Michael's essay, Roots of Aliveness, from his book, Artful Leadership [available on Amazon.ca].  Michael's music is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Collective Impact Case Study: Alberta Immigrant Collaboratives [Ratna Omidvar, Bruce Randall and Doug Piquette]

Thought Leader Ratna Omidvar highlighted the work of the Toronto Region Immigrant Employement Council and how that was scaled up to a  national program that is changing the very way that skilled immigrants are being connected into the Canadian economy.  Consistent, simple organizing principles ensure that each city's  approach has unfolded in unique ways but retained a coherence and consistency across the country.
